12/7/2013

So I have been having breakfast out but I have been missing the true Israeli breakfast experience. At first I was outraged that I had been doing it wrong but then I realised that I don't have a big enough stomach to have an Isreali breakfast everyday. Plus everything I've had so far has been delicious. Last night I read heaps and heaps of websites trying to plan my day. I found a particularity good recommendation for idelson 10. I wasn't expecting it to be open on Shabbat but I went past anyway. They were open so that's where I went. I got their special, a true Israeli breakfast. It was an omelette, a cucumber salad, a bread basket, a cheese plate, a cappuccino, and sparkling water. Wow! That is all for 1 person, if I brought a friend we would have gotten twice as much food. And it all tasted amazing.

Today I did architecture and art. I started with a 2.5 hour tour of Bauhaus articture around the city. As a Physio I kept thinking of ways to redesign the tour in a more ergonomic fashion but I leard a bit too. Bauhaus architecture bases form on function. Buildings are asymmetrical and horizontally designed except for pipes and a thermometer or window stretching the length of the building vertically. Tel aviv has a strong Bauhaus influence from the 1930's.

After the architecture tour, I went to the museum of art. First I accidentally wandered into a performance venue. Then I tried the museum of contemporary art but it was closed. I found the museum of art and had two hours to explore before they closed. I explored the first museum for an hour and a half and right before closing time I found the passage to the main building. Since I only had about 20 minutes I went straight to the Andy Warhol and miniatures galleries. AW was disappointing but I guess he always is after living in Pittsburgh. In this museum his exhibit was on the walls of the children's play area so I felt awkward staring at the art on the walls. The miniatures was cool. Lots of small scale representations of historic places in different time periods. Israel is really into miniatures. I hope to see some more this week. There is even a several mile miniature Israel in the middle of the dessert outside Jerusalem.
Next I traveled to Neve Tzedek, the first modern Jewish settlement outside Yafo. The way renovation works is that when a company renovates a historic building they pay for all expenses but are then allowed to build new structures within certain confines. So in the middle of this historic settlement is a huge and very expensive apartment building.

After that I went to the Suzan Dellal centre. There was an event taking place which looked very exciting but I couldn't figure out what it was.

After that I reached my fill of exploring for the day so I biked home along the beach. I found a lovely monument on my way.

And got dinner/a snack on the beach.

The rest of the night I spent writing my paper. I have no idea if I'm doing this right. It is due the first week of January and they still haven't given us very clear instructions on what is expected of us.
