12/6/2013

So as I said I got home last night and took a nap that lasted until morning. I decided to take a train ride to Beer Sheeva today. Beer sheva is the capital of the Negev region. It is considered a true Israeli experience without the urban influence. I wanted to go because it is in my Torah portion.
I needed to leave early, the last train back this evening is at 2pm because of Shabbat. I had a bit of a troubled start. I mistook a military base for a train station and I walked past 3 train stations on my way. Then I got on the wrong train so I had to ride back toward tel aviv to get on the correct line. When I arrived back at Lod, the station where I needed to change trains, I had missed my connection by about 5 minutes so I had almost an hour to wait before catching my train. I waited (in)patiently with a coffee and a pastry. Luckily the trains are very nice, much nicer than Australia. I'm considering incorporating more train rides into my schedule. I got to Beer Sheeva around 10 and had until 1:30 to explore. I went to the hospital, the university, and an art museum on my way to the market. All three were quite impressive. The market was less exciting. It was very cramped and quite messy.
I had been told that many of the sites that I was looking for were in Tel Beer Sheva. I met a local who offered to show me around. Luckily I wasn't alone because Tel Beer Sheva is not the nicest area. I got a bias insider's view of the area but my guide was making me increasingly nervous so I ditched him and headed back to the train station. The last train for the weekend was leaving at 1:30pm so I grabbed a pide and hoped back on the train. It was lovely but half a day was good for me.  I can now say that I've seen areas that few Israelis visit.
Most places were closing by the time I got back. I headed home with the intention of going back out later but again fell asleep early.
