Day off! well from class. I started with a track workout, went into Uni to practice for 3 hours, studied for 4 hours, went on a bike ride and finished the night with one more lecture.
In between we got costumes for the stair climb. I'm a little disappointed in the shade of the colors but they're not too bad. Now I just need to find a black belt and white socks. I might find white shorts for under my dress too but no promises. We had bought Halloween candy hoping for some trick-or-treaters tonight but didn't get any. I saw a few on my bike ride but none on our street. Halloween is much less exciting here. I'd say about 1 in 50 Australians are at all involved with Halloween and most of them have some kind of American connection. I also saw a puffy black cat with a blue bow on my bike ride. I think he was good luck.
My swim buddy Steph joined me for my track workout today. I think she's feeling just as chained to her desk as I am. She ran every other sprint with me. I was cool to have a buddy. It made me faster and felt far less tedious.
I am working hard to finish the revision so that the real preparation can begin on Sunday. The exams are 80% of my marks for the semester so I need to show them that I have been working hard all semester. 2 classes left, then 8 exams, then home:)

It was beautifully bright, sunny, and warm today. Unfortunately, I only got to enjoy an hour or so while I was on my bike ride. Aside from that it's been intense study. Our class today was all revision. I took a break at noon to see if my order had come in. It hadn't but I continued the long way home(25Km instead of 6Km). It was a lovely ride but I buckled down to study once I got back. I studied from 3 to 8 with only a couple breaks. At 8 I grilled dinner to make up for missing such a nice day. Ps that chicken sausage is mango and chili flavored. I had some left over cake so I made mango, passion fruit, and white chocolate cake. Then back for one more lecture before bed. I am trying to finish reviewing the last 22 lectures this week so that I have time to lecture capture, make tables, read journal articles, and study with friends next week. I'll try to keep the blog exciting as I go into intense study mode. Let me know if you have any requests otherwise I'll keep taking pictures of food:)

I finally have my exam schedule!!!! That means that I also finally have a flight home!!!! It's gonna be a long one. I'm scheduled for a 38hour flight. Yikes! Hopefully I get standby and can get in sooner.
We are starting to get into the intense end of semester cramming. Not that I had a ton of free time before but now I have time to study and train and sleep... And not much else. On the study front I don't have anything exciting to report. On the training front I talked Kat into a run this evening. She let me pick the route and said she was up for a long run. We went 16km which is the longest that she has ever run. It was beautiful as the sun set over the city. I need to find a way to study while running so that I can multitask. Any ideas?

I woke up this morning to find my favorite thing a flat tire! While I was out on Friday I lost the connector for my bike pump so I had no way of re-inflating it. The public transport on Sunday is miserably bad so the trip that had taken 30 minutes by bike took 3 hours by train. Katie decided that she wanted to have a birthday party for nova, Chen Chen and me today. I said it's nowhere near my birthday but I'll come. She asked for a triple birthday cake, hence the cake from yesterday. It was perfect at home but since the trip took me an hour and it's an ice cream cake it was a bit melted when I got there. As a surprise Katie got us a motorcycle ride around the city. Then we all joked that I would have preferred a tandem bicycle ride around the city. By the time I got home I had wasted 6hours of my day on public transport. Sigh. I was quite tired so I called it an early night around 7...the allergies are still knocking me out

Saturday was long bike ride day as normal. I did about 60km. I got to study for a bit when I got home. Then I had a cake to make. A 3 layer ice cream and cookie cake. It was quite the feat. I made the cookie and cake layers simultaneously but the cookie layer cooked much faster. The idea is a cookie crust so i tried to bake a cookie that went around the edge and across the bottom of the pan. But.... the walls sank down as it baked so the cookie only goes up halfway. The cake layer had much more trouble. An hour and a half later it was finally baked and needed to be frozen and frosted. The ice cream layer was easy as pie and slipped right into the cookie. Perfect sizing by Maddie! The cake is still awaiting assembly and decoration because I went to a Halloween party tonight. Halloween is not big here so my American support group had a party. It was fun I dressed up as a pirate with an eye patch, bandana, Flowy skirt, and bottle of rum. Real rum because it was BYO but I ended up having such a good night that I never drank any of it. I put it on the counter mid conversation and forgot about it until I left with a full bottle of rum. There were some good and bad costumes. The host made a pretty believable Abraham Lincoln. There was a girl who did an artistic version of start night, and a Dobby(from Harry potter) my friend Angela was a fabulous miss piggy. Other than that the costumes were pretty average. I particularity loved the candy corn. I didn't realize that I missed until tonight. The party didn't end till 1:30 so I'm spending the night with Angela who lives close to the party and heading home at a more reasonable hour.

All done with house sitting! Katie got back late and I was already asleep so I slept there. I came into uni for my Friday morning swim. Then had a couple lectures, handed in my paper, practiced a bit and went shopping. I took my friend steph shopping with me. We stopped for lunch at Max Brenner's it's a fantastic Israeli chocolate restaurant known for their waffles. They were delicious. On the shopping trip, I bought shorts and goggles. This evening after i finished shopping, I met up with a friend to go rock climbing. http://www.hardrock.com.au/
It was so fun. We climbed for 4 hours. I started on level 12(which is pretty low) and got up to level 15. By that point I was pretty tired to I backed off my last climb to level 14. My arms feel like jello. After rock climbing we went out to dinner at a Malaysian restaurant and had laksa with broccoli and eggplant. Sorry Silk Road I'd have to say that Australian Asian food kicks American Asian food's butt!

Day 4 at Katie's today went pretty well. Apparently Rosie was making a strange noise so Hannah took her to the vet. $71 later they said she was fine and sent her home. Chen Chen made soup for dinner and I made puff pastry. It was so good that everyone ate it. Wow! Hopefully Katie will be back at 11:30pm and I can head home.
In prac today we did sacroiliac testing I did not like it one bit. I almost jumped off the table when my partner pressed on my hip. I was the only one in the entire class who had a positive test so they poked at me for 10 minutes or so. It hurt like crazy by the time they were done but my symptoms subsided eventually.
I also got an interest payment today. The 5.5% that I get here is so much better than the .01% I get back home. I have been very tight budgeted since August so today I bought bike shoes, a Halloween costume, a train ticket, and a bagel.
The Melbourne marathon sent me pictures of me running. Check out my muscle definition!

Day 3 of house sitting. We're doing a bit better today. I made honey glazed chicken for dinner and even the girl who doesn't eat dinner had a piece. We found a way to keep the dogs quiet too. If you leave the light on they won't bark. Hmmmm.
We had the day off from class so I studied, did hands on practice, and ran/swam/biked. I also had absolutely miserable hay fever all day. I was fine as long as I was moving but as soon as I stopped I would feel terrible again. Eventually I was just too tired so as soon as the girls were fed and taken care of I went to bed. And slept for 12 hours. Unfortunately sleep only does so much. I need to find a way to avoid the pollen.

House sitting day 2:
Today went a bit better. I'm still stewing about last night(2 girls that are on a diet so they wont eat salad!! and the dogs barking all night) but today went better. The dog walkers also left a rather cute not that the dogs have were out for an hour today so hopefully they are calmer tonight.

Somehow despite the fact that they are on a diet the chocolate chip muffins still went in 1 day. Katie had asked my to use up the bananas in the freezer so that she didn't have to toss them. She had frozen them in the skin so the only thing that I could think to do with them was banana bread.

For dinner I made sesame chicken with potatoes since that's the only "vegetable" Chen Chen would consider eating. It was pretty good, just a tad crispy. Next time I'll have to make it with fresh chicken and cut down the baking time a bit.

Class today wasn't too bad either. We created an exercise class for stroke patients. Then we had 4 hours of small group learning. We were super efficient so that by 2pm not only had I finished both of my group projects I had also finished my paper for Friday. This one is kinda exciting it's on my experience in clinic and the ethics of withholding information from patients. Anyone want to edit it?
Dear Gillie, I had been having a Gillie-tastic week so far. I've been thinking about you because the girl I'm babysitting won't eat green things....remember when you would only eat yellow? You were much cuter than she is. Especially because you were a small child and not a vegetable hating adult. Also I was on my way home this afternoon and found a pony!! I actually stopped and looked like an idiot so that I could get you a picture.

House sitting day 1
So I'm house and babysitting for Katie this week. I have 2 responsibilities sleep here incase something goes wrong over night and cook for the girls. Both may prove to be harder than they sound. I got here at 6:30 and went to make dinner. There isn't a ton of food here but there were some veggies so I made a salad for dinner. Oops. 1 girl is on a diet and not eating dinner, the other doesn't eat green vegetables. Well poop. After we cleaned up dinner they wanted to make chocolate chip muffins Katie was missing some of the key ingredients but we managed well enough. Yum! and somehow these are diet appropriate but salad isn't....
Today was also my first day back to Uni. I can't say that I was impressed. It could have been worse; however, there was a good deal of scolding us for being dumb and not much informational content.
Grumpy face. I'll just eat a chocolate chip muffin and hope that tomorrow is more exciting.
Wait wait on a happy note I am officially re-enrolled for next semester! Yay!

All done with economics. I turned in my final and term paper today. As long as I did well on both of those I am officially done with all economic classes.
After I turned in my work I went on my Sunday run/bike combo. It was great to run in my new shoes. I ran past a bike expo and looked at bike gear for a few minutes.

The expo was for an event that I had chosen not to do. It is called around the bay in a day where you can join up with other cyclists to ride a variety of distances around all or part of port Phillip bay.

Unfortunately none of it was too exciting so I continued on my way. My shoes and I have had our first injury(didn't take long)

I got home to find my foot bloody. I didn't notice while I was running but man does it hurt now! Luckily my shoes and foot cleaned up so they are both good as new.
I prepared for next week and studied a bit of Physio when I got home. I had talked to Gillie this morning which of course reminded me of Pittsburgh and subsequently OTB and burgers with pickles and peanut butter. Since both pickles and peanut butter are American foods the quality here isn't quite as good as home but I did make a delicious turkey burger that tasted almost as good as the one from Pittsburgh.
Next week I am house sitting for Katie. I am all organized to go over there after class tomorrow but I'm already feeling home sick...and I haven't even left yet.
Kat and I had the most hilarious study conversation today. I said something. Then about 5 minutes later Kat registered that I had said something so she answered and then said "what did you say, like 5 minutes ago when you were talking to me?" By that time I had forgotten but the 5 minute delay in our conversation had me rolling around on the floor laughing.... It's gonna be a sad week at Katie's.

I started my bike ride at 6:30am so that I could go 10 miles before picking my friend up at 7:30 to go on a 20 mile ride. I would have done the extra 10 afterward but she was making breakfast. After biking and pancakes I came home to take my Econ final. I have 24hours to complete it. I worked on it all day and I feel pretty good about it. I'll look at it again tomorrow morning before I officially submit it.
Abbie I know you want birds so here is the nest on my friend steph's balcony. I don't know what kind they are but they seem darling.

My new shoes finally got here. They're fabulous! I went on a run tonight and felt super fast.
I had a super long swim workout this morning. Then we practiced skills for our exams for 3 hours. The rest of the day was a bit lazier. I watched football and made a study plan I didn't actually do any study though....
It's starting to get into allergy season so I'm sneezing constantly but the warm weather is wonderful. I'm so excited for summer!

Last day of clinics!!!! Bummer:( I had fun. We were in the spinal unit. It was a good day but a little shorter than normal. I really liked my clinics and I'm excited to go back next year.
I went for my first post marathon run today. The 7 miles were a bit slow but they went well.
We had a Mexican dinner party tonight with Kat's boyfriend and his roommate. It was nice.

Happy national ride to work day.

There were free ride to work breakfasts all over the city this morning....I woke up at 6 and went to three of them. The main one was a let down but the other two were fantastic. I got free rolls, a breakfast sandwich, a banana, honey, and a smoothie. I also entered a contest to win a free bicycle and got demos of new products.

I was in the pool for clinic today. It was lovely. We were treating stroke patients in the pool today. We were much more hands on than we had been at Allegheny Chesapeake but that could be because these are higher needs patients. During the afternoon we were with Claire. I have been hearing horror stories all week about how she is the hardest. It wasn't too bad and I liked her. She made me feel like I was learning not just taking up space.
This evening I got in a pool workout and some study tomorrow I'm going to try running....for real!
I opened my mailbox to find a card from Grammie. I was so excited. It couldn't have come on at a better time, it really made me smile at the end of a long day. It makes me so happy to hear from you. I'm glad you like the pool:) lots of love back!

Day 2 at the royal talbot inpatient rehabilitation center. I am still working on the best way to get there. The fastest way involves a road crossing that I'm not too keen on but all other roots take me a couple of miles out of my way. Either way I have to cross the world's scariest bridge to get there. It is narrow enough that two people would have trouble walking side by side, it is over a river, it has a floor of loose metal planks, and has a turn in the middle.

In clinic today we got to treat out two patients again. So in 2 days I have seen 2 patients 6 times(one 4 times, the other twice) Our other patients unfortunately did not show up. Instead we got a lesson on adhesive capsulitis and appropriate management. It was interesting to match the research that I did last week with what is being used in clinical practice. We also got to go to an exercise class for people who have recently had knee replacements. It is interesting to see the differences between treatment here and what I saw in pittsburgh. One of the patients that I saw clearly had chronic swelling in her legs that was slowing recovery. I really wanted to refer her to someone to help manage the swelling but I the supervisor disagreed. oh well.
I was feeling good and was going to go for a run this evening but I was absolutely exhausted after I got home and opted for a nap instead. By the time I got up it was raining heavily so I postponed my run until tomorrow.
Kat made homemade pizza for dinner. Yum! actually Yum!!!!!

Today I started at the royal talbot acute rehabilitation center, a branch of the Austin hospital. We arrived at 8 but they weren't expecting us until 9 so we got a bit of an easy start. They were also concerned about overworking us and let us leave at 3 since we started on time. Today I got to assess and treat 2 patients. Both of the patients had broken legs but they are at very different points in their treatment. One is going home Friday and the other is waiting to get out of the cast so that he can start treatment. It was fun, scary, and built my confidence a bit.
I didn't have too many after marathon aches today. Stairs were a bit tough and my feet were too swollen to fit my shoes but otherwise all good. I biked to clinic and back and went for a quick swim. I could have done more but the pool was full and I got annoyed. Tomorrow I might try running!

I woke up at 5am and biked into the city to run the Melbourne marathon. I finished at 4:04 but I started about 5 minutes back from the start line so I'm hoping that my official time will be under 4hours.

First of all, you know that you have run too many marathons when you start critiquing the origanization of the event. Second, this was by far the least runner friendly marathon I've done. There was no on course entertainment, there were very few spectator areas, it was a mile walk to the start line, and to leave the finish area you had to climb a long stair case. They didn't even give out water at the end. You could get a cup if you wanted to wait in line for half an hour but I couldn't be bothered. I did get my race bag where they gave me....drum roll..... Tuna!!!!... With beans!!!... I was not impressed.

What was great was that I wore the Melbourne university shirt so the gave me a free cheese platter, power aide, and muffins. My housemate and her boyfriend were fabulous as well. Very sweet, caring and helpful all day. They took me out to lunch, carried my supplies, cheered for me and made me pancakes!
Aside from the marathon I was utterly useless today. Just relaxing, reading, sleeping, and watching tangled.
Can't wait to walk around the clinic tomorrow....

I studied, baked, and got ready for the marathon today.

I made the most delicious butterbeer cupcakes but they aren't very good prerace food. They gave me quite the stomach ache when I went for a jog this afternoon. I'm heading to bed early tonight so that I'm bright eyed and bushy tailed for the Melbourne Marathon tomorrow. The race starts at 7am Melbourne time Sunday morning. You can track me here: www.mapandrun.com my number is 1710

Friday off! Wahoo! I spent my day off doing laundry, studying, running, going to the marathon expo, and eating tart. The tart was amazing the marathon expo left something to be desired. They didn't have very many vendors and most of them were trying to sell energy bars. I couldn't even pick up my race packet because I didn't bring my number with me. They mail the numbers to make things less hectic on race day. Then expect you to carry around that number on your person for all pre-race events without losing or crumpling the number. Seems dumb. The picture didn't count I had to come back with the number to pick up the pre race pack that will need to be collected and deposited at home prior to the race Sunday morning. Sigh!
I went over to my friend Angela's house for dinner. It was fantastic. She made chicken, mashed potatoes, an onion sauce, apple cake, banana bread and I brought tart. It was delicious. We along with two of her other friends had a lovely evening of talking and munching.
Tomorrow should be much the same but a tad more productive.

Last day in the neurosurgery ward! I'm sad I really liked it. We started the day by doing and evaluation. The first one was scary but by number 4 I felt better. We also got to write up the paperwork and make recommendation. My partner and I had a ton of fun and are sad to leave.

Kat and I had a lazy night of Nachos, chocolate tart and movies. The tart was amazing but I am uncomfortably full after a second piece. With no class tomorrow I'm going to enjoy the pre-marathon festivities and clean a bit.

I'm sad that I start at a different hospital on Monday. I was just starting to enjoy the commute. This picture is the highlight where I wait at the train crossing.

The cool thing about the date is that everyone writes it the same:) day/month/year=month/day/year saves me some confusion.
It was day 3 in clinic. I can't believe that I'm almost done with the first rotation. I've had tons of fun. We started the morning again with Tom. Right before lunch we got to stand up an overweight lady who has been previously unable to get out of bed in a standing frame. During the afternoon we followed Mark who is funny and very knowledgable. Unfortunately we kept getting lost.
I had to fix another flat tire on my bike before I could ride home, my 5th this week. It has been ridiculous! As I continue my marathon week training I enjoyed another fun and ease workout before writing a bit of my paper. Fun stuff!

I woke up early and biked in again, hating every hill and traffic light of my commute. The distance is not pleasant but I do like the hospital where I have my placement. Today our supervisor was out sick so Nikki(my placement partner) and I worked with Mike and Tom. Together we covered all of the patients on the neurosurgery ward this morning and went down to the cancer ward this afternoon. In addition to deciphering charts we were able to write notes, and assist with mobilizing patients today. This morning we spent a good amount of time evaluating the patients and determining if there was enough of a need to warrant spending time doing physio with the patients. This afternoon we were helping to cover the extra work on the cancer unit so we had plenty of time to spend with the three patients that we saw between the hours of 2 and 4. Big change compared to Allegheny Chesapeake :)
I found a new favorite flower. These are called singapore orchids. oooo!

I got home a bit earlier today and started to write my clinical paper. Kat and I took a break to go run 10Km. It was Kat's night to cook and she made noodles in a peanut sauce. It was stellar! Then back to studying. I meant to do more catching up on work this week, now I'm banking on doing work on my long weekend.
Most interesting pt of the day: A man who was diagnosed with lymphoma while in a medically induced coma and is therefore unaware of his condition or the treatment that he is receiving. Perfect for my paper on patient ethics! ...but a little scarry.
I promise I'll put up pictures of the uniforms soon. I just keep forgetting to take a picture before I change.

First day of clinics!!! I left home to go to the Austin Hospital at 6:00 the commute was half travel and half being lost. I'll be able to leave a tad later tomorrow since I know where I'm going now. We spent the first half of the day doing administrative things, getting ID cards, learning about computers, getting library access. This afternoon we actually got to see patients. My partner Nikki and I spent about 3 hours trying to read patient charts. They were confusing but we got the hang of it by the end of the day. We got to see 2 patients but the most interesting one was the one that we didn't get to see. A sweet lady was mugged at the market and broke both arms and her back! Crazy! We'll get to see her tomorrow today she didn't have appropriate pain relief to work with us.
We were lucky enough to get free lunch. A bank was doing a promotion in the lobby and gave away free food to all hospital staff. (Which is us!!)
On my way home from the hospital I went to my friend Angela's house. She was sick and couldn't make it to clinic so I brought her the things that she had missed. Passing her house I found a duck. :)
Happy Birthday Grumpy! I hope that it was absolutely wonderful.

Unfortunately since I lost an hour my day seemed thoroughly unproductive. I studied(just a tad), ran, biked, went grocery shopping baked brownies and packed my bag for tomorrow.
Tomorrow I start my placement at the Austin hospital. I'm excited, it's a really nice hospital but it is far away. I need to be there early so I'll be leaving the house at 6am. I will be working in one of the stroke units. Ooo.
The brownies today were salted caramel. They are amazing. I forgot to take a picture so you'll just have to settle for the recipe and trust me when I tell you that mine look 1.7x as delicious. http://www.browneyedbaker.com/2010/08/16/salted-caramel-brownies/
As it is spring the birds are out in force People are actually swooped. As in, birds of all kinds try to dive bomb your head. Despite my best efforts I have been failing on both the bird and the silly anti bird hats. I'm just not fast enough with the camera. To make up for it, I have some bird art that I found under a bridge on my run today.

Set your clocks ahead daylight savings time starts today. Not for you just for me. This means that the time difference between Melbourne and Eastern time is now 15hours. It also means that it's darker in the morning when I need to wake up:(
Today I started with a 34mile bike ride and pancakes with my friend Steph.
Then I came home and had lunch:)
I had a productive afternoon of study and cleaning before meeting Kat and her boyfriend for a run and lasagna.
We(they) also tried to make French macaroons but the day was too wet and rainy so the cookies became flat and sticky. Luckily they still tasted amazing. We watched Harry Potter and Run fatboy run with dinner. Cute movie.

Today was our last day of class before we all go out to work in hospitals for 2 weeks. Today was also my last swim workout before the Melbourne marathon next weekend(10/14/2012). My excitement for the day came in prac class when I got to hold an Olympic metal. Ooooo! Totally made my day!
Other than that I was quite lazy. When we finished class at 1 I came home and spent the rest of the day enjoying my book. There is plenty to do to prepare for next week but that starts tomorrow!

We had the day off today! While many of my classmates went to the beach Kat and I stayed at home and stressed about the paper that we have due tomorrow. Around 1pm I gave up and studied for a bit. That lasted for 2 lectures worth of review when I decided to go to the beach as well. I biked to the bay to do my run for the day. It was so nice out that I thought it might be a good idea to go for a swim in the ocean. Burrr. It was probably 45-50degrees F. When I attempted to swim it was so cold that I couldn't breath. I made it 1 stroke and got out. On my bike ride home I rode past a police stop where they were siting riders for having earphones, running lights, not having helmets, etc. Luckily I was completely legal and breezed past. I got home to do more study and change my paper again. At 10pm I gave up and called it a night. Back to rewriting tomorrow morning!

We start working in clinics next week so this week they are preparing us. I swam this morning and then practiced skills with my classmates until 1pm when I had stair training. We tried the law building today. It was less embarrassing than the econ building that we did last week but it also didn't have stairwell access so we couldn't ride the lifts(elevators) down. After stairs we went to al dolche freddo for gelato. It was really good. I got rum raisin and tiramisu.mmmmm. I came home to work on the paper that is due Friday. I quickly got bored and went for a run. Then I went for a bike ride. Then I hemmed my pants for clinic next week(because I am not as tall as I think I am). By the time I was done it was almost time for dinner. Kat cooked for me and her boyfriend. She made risotto and chocolate cake. Yum-O! While she was cooking she sat me down to watch Mama-Mia because I have never seen it. I enjoyed the musical and Pierce Brosnan while I worked some more on my assignment.

Sorry about the late post. I was a bit tired after class yesterday so I layed down for a Nana nap. I was really tired because I woke up 12 hours later. Oops.
Anyway I had an exciting day. I got to be the fake patient as we discussed knee problems. I got complimented on my soft skin and hyper extending knees.
In the afternoon we took a field trip to the spinal unit. We talked with patients, identified different types of cord lesions and learned wheelchair skills.
The hospital is about 15km away so I enjoyed a nice bike ride home. There are some fantastic birds that have shown up this spring. I've been trying to get pictures but they are exceptionally hard to photograph

We have an easy week at uni as we prepare to go out on clinics. We were done with class by 1pm today. After that we stayed around to practice for a bit before going home to study more. It was a beautiful day and I took a nap on the back porch as I was trying to learn about neurosurgery. I was going to study all evening but the promise of cookies talked me into Monday night football.... Because we watch Sunday games on Monday night. The cookies were amazing and we did get a bit of musc study done during the game as well.
I hoped on my bike to head home and found a flat tire. Bummer. It's a slow leak but I still took the train home so that I didn't have to stop and refill every 5 minutes.
